Nissan To Build 'Electric Leaf Car' In UK (Sunderland)

Nissan is to build the worlds mass produced electric family car in the United Kingdom (UK)

The Japanese car manufacturing giant has today confirmed that it will be creating up to 600 new jobs in its Sunderland plant.

The 'Nissan Leaf' will be eligible for a government cash back scheme of £5,000 bringing the cost of ownership down to £15,000.

The plant producing batteries for the car will be running by late 2011 and by the end of 2012 the main car production line will be operational, creating up to 60,000 cars a year and hundreds of new jobs.

The Nissan Leaf all electric car is set to be able to cover 100 miles between charges, not bad for city commuting but I would think they will need to double that distance to make it a viable alternative to the combustion engines of today.
