Top Gardening Tips - March 2010

Here are some fantastic tips from our favorite TV gardening experts.

Charlie Dimmock

"You don't need a whole patch to start growing your own. There are so many containers out there, or add fruit and veg to your flower beds, which can look pretty. For instance, you can grow beans among your roses. You only need two or three runner bean plants to get a good crop!"

Diarmuid Gavin

"You can plant a few things inside like lettuce or cabbage. Start planting potatoes in March. Remember, you can share excess produce around."

Alan Titchmarsh

"Grow varieties that are good-looking as well as useful, like baby salad leaves. Garden centres stock mixed packets but for the most decorative results buy individual types and grow them, separately as edgings around taller crops."

Rachel de Thame

"Containers are a great way to take your first steps into growing your own food and tomatoes are the best things to try. Pots, seed compost, tomato canes and seeds... You're all set! Nothing beats the taste and aroma of tomatoes you've grown yourself."

Kim Wilde

"Grow herbs outside the back door in containers. Mint, lemon-balm wild strawberries and golden marjoram will all thrive in partial shade. Rosemary and sage are among some of the easiest plants to grow in the garden and are some of the most aromatic."
